Building Math Confidence at the Start of the Year
Why confidence matters as much as ability in math. From a Texas Master Teacher.
A student's belief about whether they can do math shapes their math future almost as much as their actual ability does. A confident student engages, persists through hard problems, and asks questions. A student who believes they're bad at math disengages, gives up quickly, and avoids the very practice that would help. The start of the school year is one of the best moments to set that belief in the right direction.
I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math. Here's why confidence matters so much and how to build it as the year begins.
Why Confidence Is Not a Soft Concern
It's tempting to treat confidence as a nice-to-have next to the "real" work of learning math. But confidence directly drives the behaviors that produce learning.
A student who believes they can do math will attempt a hard problem, sit with confusion, ask for help, and keep going after a setback. A student who believes they can't will skip the problem, hide the confusion, avoid asking, and quit early. Same ability, entirely different outcomes, purely because of belief.
This is why the "I'm just not a math person" belief is so damaging. It becomes self-fulfilling. The student stops doing the things that build ability, falls further behind, and their belief gets confirmed.
Why the Start of the Year Matters
Early experiences set expectations. A student who has some success in the first weeks starts the year believing they can handle it, which fuels the engagement that produces more success. A student who feels lost immediately can conclude early that this year is going to be a disaster, and disengage before the year has really started.
The first weeks are also when the year's material is usually most approachable, which makes it the easiest time to generate the wins that build confidence.
How to Build Confidence
Make sure they can actually succeed. Confidence built on nothing is fragile. Real confidence comes from real success. If your child is missing foundational skills, no amount of encouragement substitutes for closing that gap so they can genuinely do the work.
Start the year on solid ground. A little review before or at the start of the year means your child isn't rusty in the first weeks. Coming in prepared produces early wins.
Praise effort and process, not just being "smart." Praising a child for being smart at math makes them afraid to struggle, since struggling would disprove it. Praising effort, strategy, and persistence teaches them that difficulty is normal and worth pushing through.
Normalize the struggle. Let your child know that everyone finds math hard sometimes and that confusion is part of learning, not evidence of failure. This alone protects a lot of kids from concluding they're bad at math.
Watch your own language. Parents who say "I was never good at math either" mean it kindly, but it can hand a child permission to give up. It's more helpful to model that math is learnable.
Address struggles quickly. Nothing erodes confidence like weeks of not understanding. Early intervention protects belief as well as skills.
