Every school leader I talk to wants to close their math achievement gaps. The will is there. What's often missing is a clear approach that addresses why the gaps exist in the first place, rather than chasing the symptom with more of the same. Gaps that took years to form don't close through a single initiative or a burst of extra worksheets. They close through sustained, root-focused strategy.

Start by Understanding Why the Gap Exists

Before any strategy, you need to understand the specific nature of the gap. "Students are behind in math" is not enough to act on. Behind in what, specifically? Which skills, which concepts, which grade levels of foundation are missing? Different gaps have different causes and need different responses.

The most common driver in math is foundational: students who are behind usually have accumulated gaps in earlier material that later concepts depend on. Any serious strategy has to account for this, because you cannot close a gap at grade level while the foundation underneath it is still missing.

This is why root-focused intervention can produce faster gains than simply intensifying grade-level instruction. You're fixing the cause instead of fighting the symptom.

Use Data to Target Precisely

Closing gaps efficiently means knowing exactly where each student's gap is, so support goes precisely where it's needed rather than being spread thin. Good use of assessment data lets a school identify specific skill gaps, group students by shared need, and direct intervention where it will do the most good. Precision matters, because school resources are limited and scattered effort closes gaps slowly if at all.

Intervene Early and Consistently

Two things dramatically affect how well gaps close: how early they're caught and how consistently they're addressed.

Early matters because gaps compound. A gap caught in third grade is a fraction of the work it becomes by ninth. Strong early screening and intervention prevent small gaps from growing into large ones.

Consistency matters because closing a gap is cumulative. Sporadic, stop-and-start intervention produces sporadic results. Sustained, regular support is what steadily closes distance. A strategy that runs consistently over time outperforms an intense burst that fades.

Build Confidence Alongside Skill

Students with achievement gaps have often internalized that they're "bad at math." That belief becomes its own barrier, driving avoidance and reduced effort that widen the gap further. Effective gap-closing addresses the confidence problem alongside the skill problem, by structuring intervention so students experience real success and rebuild their belief that they can do this. Skill and confidence rise together, and neglecting the second undermines the first.

Support and Equip Teachers

Teachers are the ones who close gaps in the end, and they need the tools to do it: training in diagnosing and addressing foundational gaps, time to provide targeted support, and strategies for differentiating instruction. Investing in teacher capacity is one of the highest-leverage moves a school can make, because it multiplies across every student those teachers reach.

Make It Systemic, Not a One-Off

Gaps that formed over years don't close through a single program that runs and ends. Lasting progress comes from building gap-closing into how the school operates: continuous screening, systematic intervention, ongoing use of data, and sustained support. The schools that make real progress treat this as an ongoing practice, not a temporary initiative.
