Fun Ways to Keep Math Alive Over Summer

The best summer math doesn't feel like math. It feels like cooking, or a card game, or figuring out whether you can afford the bigger ice cream. Kids resist worksheets in July, and honestly, fair enough. But they'll happily do real math all summer long if it's wrapped in something they actually want to do.

I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math. Here are ways to keep math alive that your child won't fight you on.

In the Kitchen

Cooking and baking are genuinely rich math. Recipes are fractions. Doubling a batch is multiplication and scaling. Halving one is division. Measuring is units and conversion. Timing is arithmetic. Let your child do the measuring and the math, and they're practicing skills that transfer straight back to school, with cookies at the end.

Games

A lot of ordinary games are math in disguise:

  • Card games involve counting, adding, probability, and strategy
  • Dice games are probability and mental arithmetic
  • Board games with money, resources, or scoring are constant calculation
  • Strategy games build logical reasoning, which underpins mathematical thinking

Game night is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to keep a child's math brain running.

Out in the World

At the store. Comparing unit prices, calculating a discount, estimating the total, checking the change. Hand your child the job and they're doing real math with real stakes.

On a trip. Distances, drive times, gas costs, budgets, currency if you're going far. Travel is a math workbook that doesn't look like one.

Sports. Statistics, averages, scores, standings. A kid who loves a sport will happily do math about it.

Building and Making

Anything your child builds involves measurement, geometry, and estimation. Woodworking, crafts, models, gardening, even rearranging a bedroom. Physical projects make spatial and measurement math concrete in a way worksheets never do.

Puzzles and Curiosities

Logic puzzles, number puzzles, brain teasers, and math-y apps or books that are genuinely fun. For a child who enjoys them, these build reasoning without any sense of being schoolwork. The trick is finding ones your specific child actually likes.

Just Talk About Numbers

The simplest one. Notice math out loud. Estimate things together. Ask "about how much do you think that costs?" or "how long until we get there?" Everyday number talk builds number sense naturally, and it costs nothing.

Why This Works

Beyond keeping skills from rusting, this approach does something a worksheet can't: it shows your child that math is genuinely useful and part of the real world, not an arbitrary school subject invented to torment them. A child who sees math working in their actual life relates to it differently, and that shift in attitude is worth as much as the skills practice.
