How to Help With Word Problems in Math
Why word problems trip kids up and how to help your child solve them. From a Texas Master Teacher.
Word problems are where a lot of capable students fall apart. A child who can solve an equation quickly freezes the moment that same math is wrapped in a paragraph. Parents often tell me their child "can do the math but not the word problems," and there's a real reason for that. Word problems test a different skill, and it's one most students never get enough practice with.
I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math. Here's why word problems are hard and a step-by-step way to help your child master them.
Why Word Problems Are So Hard
The math in a word problem is often the easy part. The hard part is figuring out what math the problem is even asking for. A word problem requires a student to read a situation, understand it, decide which operations apply, and set up the math, all before doing any calculating. That translation step, turning words into math, is a genuine skill separate from computation.
This is why a child can be strong at solving equations and weak at word problems. They never struggled with the calculating. They struggle with building the setup from a paragraph, because that's a different mental task that classrooms often don't teach explicitly enough.
Word problems also show up everywhere on important tests, from STAAR to the SAT, which lean heavily on exactly this reasoning. So it's a skill worth building well.
A Step-by-Step Approach
Here's the method I teach students, and you can use it to help your child at home.
Step 1: Read it twice. The first read is just to understand the situation. What's happening here? The second read is to find the specifics. Rushing this step is where most mistakes begin.
Step 2: Identify what the question is actually asking. Have your child put the goal in their own words. "What am I trying to find?" Naming the target clearly keeps them from solving the wrong thing.
Step 3: Pull out the important information. What numbers and facts matter? Word problems sometimes include extra details, so identifying what's relevant is part of the skill. Underlining or listing the key information helps.
Step 4: Decide which operations to use. This is the translation step. What does the situation call for? Combining suggests addition, taking away suggests subtraction, groups suggest multiplication, and sharing suggests division. Connecting the words to the math is the heart of it.
Step 5: Set up and solve. Now build the equation and do the math, the part your child may already be good at.
Step 6: Check whether the answer makes sense. Does the answer actually fit the situation? A child who built strong number sense will catch answers that are obviously off, which is a valuable habit.
How to Practice at Home
Talk through the thinking out loud. Have your child narrate their reasoning: "I know this, so I need to do that." Getting the logic flowing out loud, before worrying about a perfect written setup, builds the translation skill.
Don't rush to the answer. The goal isn't just a correct answer tonight. It's building the ability to approach any word problem. Focus on the process, not the speed.
Connect problems to real life. Word problems describe real situations, so pointing out the math in everyday life, at the store, in the kitchen, on a trip, makes the translation feel natural rather than abstract.
Practice the setup separately. Sometimes it helps to practice just steps one through four, reading and setting up, without even solving. Isolating the translation skill strengthens exactly the part that's usually weak.
