How to Study for a Math Test
Why studying math is different and what actually works. From a Texas Master Teacher.
A lot of students study hard for math tests and still do badly, which is discouraging for them and confusing for parents. Usually the problem isn't effort. It's that they're studying math the way they'd study history, and math doesn't work that way. Studying for math requires a different approach, and once a student learns it, their results often change quickly.
I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math. Here's why math studying is different and what actually works.
Why Studying Math Is Different
In most subjects, studying means absorbing information. You read, review, memorize, and recall. Math isn't like that. Math is a performance skill, closer to playing an instrument than to memorizing dates. You can't get good at it by reading about it. You get good by doing it.
This is the core mistake. A student who "studies" for a math test by rereading notes and looking over examples is essentially watching someone else play the piano and expecting to perform. It feels like studying, and it produces very little. On test day, when they have to actually solve problems themselves, they discover they can't.
What Actually Works
Do problems. That's the core of it. The single most effective way to study math is to work problems, without looking at the answers or the notes, and then check. Active problem-solving is what builds the ability the test will measure.
Work problems you haven't seen before. Redoing problems you've already solved feels productive but mostly tests memory. New problems test whether you can actually apply the concept, which is what the test will demand.
Study without the safety net. Practice the way you'll be tested: no notes, no examples to copy from, no looking up the next step. If a student can only solve problems with their notes open, they can't solve them.
Find out what you can't do. The whole point of practice is to discover your weak spots while there's still time to fix them. A student who only practices what they're already good at learns nothing. Seek out the problems that are hard.
Understand the why, not just the steps. A student who memorized a procedure gets stuck when the test presents a problem slightly differently. A student who understands the concept can adapt. Tests almost always vary the problems, which is exactly why understanding beats memorization.
Space it out. Cramming works poorly for math because skill takes time to build. Practicing across several days is far more effective than one long night.
A Simple Method
- Identify what the test covers.
- Work practice problems on each topic, closed-book.
- Note which ones you got wrong or couldn't start.
- Go back and learn those specific things properly, until you understand them.
- Work new problems on those weak areas to confirm they're fixed.
- Repeat until the weak areas are gone.
That cycle, practice, find weakness, fix it, confirm, is what real math studying looks like.
Why Students Resist This
Doing problems you can't solve is uncomfortable. Rereading notes feels safe and productive. So students naturally drift toward passive review and away from the active practice that actually works. Understanding that the discomfort is the learning helps a student push through it. The struggle in practice is precisely what prevents the struggle on the test.

Study skills are teachable, and many students have simply never been shown how to study math properly.
