Is Your Child Guessing Their Way Through Math?
How to tell if your child is guessing rather than understanding. From a Texas Master Teacher.
Some students who look like they're doing okay in math are actually guessing, pattern-matching, and hoping. They get enough answers right to keep grades afloat, so nobody investigates. Then one day the math gets harder, guessing stops working, and everything falls apart at once, seemingly out of nowhere. It wasn't out of nowhere. The problem was there the whole time, hidden.
I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math. Here's how to spot a guesser and what to do about it.
What Guessing Looks Like
Guessing in math isn't usually random. It's more sophisticated and harder to catch. A student might:
- Match the current problem to one they've seen and copy the procedure, without understanding why
- Try an operation and see if the answer "looks right"
- Use surface cues, if the problem has two numbers, multiply them, because that's usually what these problems want
- Follow memorized steps without any grasp of what they're doing or why
- Get the right answer through a wrong process and never know
None of this is genuine understanding, but it can produce correct answers often enough to hide the problem for a surprisingly long time.
Why It's Easy to Miss
Guessers can have decent grades. Homework gets done, some tests go fine, and nothing looks alarming from the outside. The pattern-matching works while problems stay similar to what's been practiced.
It falls apart when the math gets harder or less predictable. Word problems that don't match a template. Multi-step problems. Anything requiring genuine reasoning rather than procedure recall. And in algebra especially, where you can't pattern-match your way through, the whole strategy collapses. This is why some students seem to hit a wall in algebra despite doing "fine" for years.
Signs Your Child Is Guessing
- They can do practice problems but fail tests with slightly different problems
- They can't explain why they did what they did, only what they did
- They ask "do I add or multiply?" as if it's a coin flip rather than something the problem tells them
- They get right answers but can't show or describe a coherent process
- They're thrown completely by problems that look unfamiliar, even when the underlying concept is the same
- They don't notice when an answer is obviously unreasonable
The Best Test: Ask "Why?"
Here's the simplest way to find out. When your child solves a problem, ask them to explain why they did each step. Not what they did, but why.
A student who understands can tell you: "I multiplied because there are four groups of three." A guesser can't. They'll say "that's just how you do it," or "I don't know, it worked," or they'll get flustered. That inability to explain the reasoning is the clearest signal that understanding is missing, even when the answer is right.
Why This Has to Be Addressed
Guessing is a strategy with an expiration date. It works in earlier grades where problems are repetitive, and it fails as math grows more complex and abstract. A student who has been guessing arrives at algebra with years of accumulated non-understanding, and no foundation to build on. The collapse looks sudden but has been coming for a long time.
Catching it early means fixing a smaller problem. The longer guessing goes undetected, the more material gets built on a foundation that was never really there.
