Math and Dyscalculia: Signs and Support
What dyscalculia is, signs to notice, and how to support a child. From a Texas Master Teacher.
Most people have heard of dyslexia, the learning difference that affects reading. Far fewer have heard of dyscalculia, its counterpart in math, even though it affects a meaningful number of students. If your child finds math genuinely and persistently difficult in ways that don't seem to match their effort or their abilities in other subjects, it's worth understanding what dyscalculia is and how to support a child who struggles with numbers.
I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math to students of all kinds. I want to be clear up front: I'm an educator, not a diagnostician. This article is for understanding and support, not diagnosis. If you suspect dyscalculia, a qualified professional is the right person to evaluate for it.
What Dyscalculia Is
Dyscalculia is a specific learning difference that affects a person's ability to understand and work with numbers. Just as dyslexia affects reading despite intelligence and effort, dyscalculia affects math specifically. A child with dyscalculia may be bright and capable across the board, yet find core number concepts genuinely hard in a way that isn't explained by lack of trying or lack of good teaching.
It exists on a spectrum, affecting different children to different degrees, and it's a real, recognized difference, not a matter of a child being lazy or "just bad at math." Understanding that distinction matters enormously, both for getting the right help and for how a child comes to see themselves.
Signs Parents Sometimes Notice
These are signs that can be associated with dyscalculia. Any one of them alone is common and often means nothing. A persistent pattern, especially one that seems out of step with a child's abilities elsewhere, is what may be worth exploring with a professional:
- Ongoing difficulty with basic number sense and understanding what numbers represent
- Persistent trouble learning and recalling math facts despite lots of practice
- Difficulty connecting a number to the quantity it represents
- Confusion with the order and relationships of numbers
- Trouble with the sequence of steps in math procedures
- Difficulty estimating or telling whether an answer is reasonable
- Math anxiety that seems tied to genuine, persistent difficulty rather than an isolated struggle
Importantly, these signs point toward "worth looking into with a professional," not "here's a diagnosis." Only a qualified evaluator can determine whether dyscalculia is present.
How to Support a Child Who Struggles With Numbers
Whether or not a child has a formal diagnosis, many of the same supportive approaches help a student who finds math genuinely hard.
Be patient and understanding. A child who struggles this way is not being lazy. Recognizing that the difficulty is real changes how you respond, and how the child feels about themselves. Patience matters more than almost anything.
Use concrete, multisensory approaches. Physical objects, visual models, and hands-on tools help make abstract number concepts tangible. Connecting numbers to things a child can see and touch supports understanding that symbols alone may not.
Go slowly and build solid foundations. Rushing doesn't help. Taking the time to build genuine understanding of foundational concepts, without pressure, serves these students far better than speed.
Protect their confidence. A child who struggles with math is at real risk of deciding they're "stupid," which is both false and harmful. Keeping the experience encouraging, celebrating effort and progress, and separating their difficulty with math from their worth as a person protects the confidence that struggling students so easily lose.
Get the right professional support. If dyscalculia is suspected, a qualified professional can evaluate and guide appropriate accommodations and strategies. The right diagnosis opens the door to the right help.
