The SAT Math Concepts Students Miss Most (And How to Fix Them)

After preparing many students for the SAT, I've noticed that the points don't leak out evenly across the test. They cluster. The same handful of topics trip up student after student, which is actually good news, because it means prep can be targeted. If you know where the points usually go, you know exactly where to focus.

I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years of experience teaching math, including SAT prep. Here are the areas I see students lose the most points, and how we turn each one into reliable points.

1. Systems of Equations

Students often handle a single equation fine but stumble when two equations have to be solved together, especially when the problem is dressed up in a word problem. The fix is recognizing the setup quickly and drilling the two main solving approaches until choosing between them is automatic. Once a student sees these as routine, they become some of the most reliable points on the test.

2. Word Problems That Require Translation

The math itself is often easy. The hard part is turning a paragraph into an equation. Students who are strong at computation but weak at setup lose points here constantly. The fix is deliberate practice at the translation step alone: reading a situation, identifying the quantities, and building the equation before solving anything.

3. Fractions, Ratios, and Proportions

These show up all over the SAT, and shaky fraction skills cost points across many different question types. Because the weakness is foundational, it's easy to miss. The fix is rebuilding fraction and proportion fluency directly, which tends to lift performance on a surprising range of questions at once.

4. Percentages and Percent Change

Percent problems, especially percent increase and decrease and multi-step percent situations, catch a lot of students. The fix is mastering the underlying relationship rather than memorizing a formula, so a student can handle any version the test throws at them instead of only the one they practiced.

5. Exponents and Their Rules

The rules for exponents are simple individually but easy to confuse under pressure, and the SAT likes to combine them. The fix is enough practice that the rules become automatic, plus attention to the specific combinations the test favors.

6. Functions and Function Notation

Function notation confuses students who never fully grasped what it means. Once a student truly understands what a function is doing, notation questions get much easier. The fix is building that conceptual understanding first, then practicing the notation until it's comfortable.

7. Linear Equations and Slope

The concept of slope and interpreting linear relationships, especially in real-world contexts, trips up more students than you'd expect. The fix is connecting the algebra to what it actually means, so a student can interpret slope in a word problem rather than just calculate it in the abstract.

8. Geometry With Missing Steps

SAT geometry problems often require a student to find an intermediate value before they can get the answer, and students get stuck when the path isn't obvious. The fix is practicing multi-step geometry so students get comfortable working toward an answer that isn't immediately reachable.

9. Data and Graph Interpretation

Reading information from tables, charts, and graphs, then doing math with it, catches students who rush. The fix is slowing down enough to read the data carefully, since the math is usually straightforward once the information is pulled correctly.

10. Careless Errors Under Time Pressure

This one isn't a topic, but it costs as many points as any topic on the list. Students who know the math lose points to rushing, sign mistakes, and misread questions. The fix is building careful habits under timed conditions until accuracy holds up even at speed.

The Pattern Behind the List

Notice how many of these come back to foundations: fractions, proportions, understanding what a function or a slope actually means. The SAT loves to test whether a student truly understands the underlying math or just memorized procedures. That's why the most effective prep often reaches back to strengthen fundamentals, not just drill test questions. Fix the foundation, and a whole cluster of these problem areas improves together.
