STAAR Math: A Grade-by-Grade Look at What's Tested

Parents often ask me what exactly the STAAR is going to ask their child, and it's a reasonable question, because the answer changes a lot depending on the grade. What a third grader faces and what an eighth grader faces are very different tests, even though both are built on the same Texas standards.

I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years in Texas classrooms. Here's a grade-by-grade sense of what STAAR math involves and how preparation should shift.

The Constant Across All Grades

Whatever the grade, STAAR math is built around the TEKS, the Texas standards, and it leans heavily on reasoning and word problems rather than bare computation. Students are consistently asked to read a situation, decide what math applies, set it up, and often work through multiple steps, within a time limit.

That means at every grade level, success requires two things: knowing the math, and being able to handle how STAAR asks about it. A student can have one without the other and still struggle.

I'm keeping the specifics general on purpose. The exact tested content and format get updated over time, so confirm the current details through your child's school or the official Texas materials for the year they're testing.

Elementary Grades

In the earlier grades, STAAR math focuses on the foundations: number sense and place value, the four operations, early fractions, basic measurement and geometry, and simple data.

The challenge here is often less about the math and more about the format. Young students have to read carefully, work within a time limit, and handle word problems, which is a lot to manage. Preparation at this level should build genuine foundational understanding while also getting the child comfortable with reading and working through STAAR-style questions calmly.

Upper Elementary and Middle Grades

As students advance, the math deepens: fraction and decimal operations, ratios and proportional reasoning, percentages, more advanced geometry and measurement, and increasingly complex multi-step problems.

This is where foundational gaps start to bite hard. A student shaky on fractions will struggle across a wide swath of the test, because so much of it rests on that foundation. Preparation at this stage frequently means repairing earlier gaps, not just drilling current material.

Later Middle School and Algebra

By the upper middle grades and into algebra-level assessment, students face linear relationships, expressions and equations, functions, slope, and the abstract reasoning that algebra demands.

Here the stakes rise, because this material gateways higher math. Preparation means making sure the algebra foundations are genuinely solid, along with the earlier skills algebra depends on: fractions, negative numbers, and proportional reasoning. Weakness in those older areas shows up as an algebra problem.

How Preparation Should Change by Grade

Younger students need foundational understanding plus comfort with the test format and reading demands, in a low-pressure way that doesn't create anxiety.

Middle students usually need earlier gaps found and repaired, especially fractions, since so much of the test leans on them.

Older students need solid algebra foundations, and often the repair of the earlier skills algebra assumes.

Across all grades, the same three things matter: fix the real gaps, teach the test format directly, and build confidence so the student walks in calm.
