Every fall, teachers watch it happen. Students come back from summer break having lost ground, and the first weeks of the new year get spent reviewing what was already learned. This is the "summer slide," and in math it's very real. The good news is that it's also very preventable, and it doesn't take much to keep your child from losing what they worked so hard to build.
I'm Charlotte Thielen, a Texas Master Teacher with more than 21 years teaching math. Here's what the summer slide is, why math is especially vulnerable to it, and how to prevent it without ruining anyone's summer.
What the Summer Slide Is
The summer slide is the loss of academic skills over the long summer break. When skills aren't used for a couple of months, they fade. Students often return in the fall measurably behind where they finished in the spring, which is why so much of early fall is review rather than new learning.
Math is particularly prone to this. Math skills are procedural and cumulative, and they rely on regular practice to stay sharp. A student who doesn't touch math for an entire summer can lose fluency with facts, forget procedures, and feel rusty on concepts that were solid in May. Because math builds on itself, starting the year rusty puts a student behind right as new material begins.
Why Preventing It Matters
The summer slide has a compounding effect. A student who slides back each summer keeps starting the year behind, and those setbacks add up over years. Preventing the slide isn't just about one summer. It's about not repeatedly giving back ground and falling further from where the student could be.

How to Prevent the Summer Slide
A little regular practice goes a long way. You don't need hours a day. Short, regular math practice through the summer is enough to keep skills sharp. Consistency matters more than volume. Even a few sessions a week preserves fluency.
Keep it light and positive. Summer math shouldn't feel like punishment. Keeping it low-pressure and even enjoyable means a child will actually stick with it, which is what makes the difference.
Weave math into summer life. Cooking, travel, shopping, games. Everyday activities are full of math, and using them keeps skills alive without it feeling like schoolwork.
Target weak spots. Summer is a wonderful time to shore up a specific area that was shaky during the year, without the pressure of keeping up with new material. Fixing a weak foundation over the summer pays off all year.
Consider getting ahead. For a student who's solid, summer can be a chance to preview upcoming material, so they start the year confident and prepared rather than just caught up.
